Detours

Driving into Auckland the other night lead me onto another detour (due to roadworks) A late night one as well - with the detour signage not being that great. The result was that I and 5 other cars ended up in a dead-end lost in some back street far from finding our way back onto the freeway. Pretty frustrating it was.

I pragmatically followed the detour signs back to where I could see other traffic, and then decided to follow the BIG trucks. I figured as truckies - they'd know where they were going!

The tactic worked, and eventually the trucks lead me back onto the highway.

So here are a few questions.
  • Does this happen on the web?
  • Does it happen on your website?
  • Do people get lost in dead-ends?
  • Do they retrace their steps?
More importantly - how could we all provide better signage and directions - to prevent this happening to the visitors to our websites in the first place?

  1. Great analogy Mick.

Breadcrumbs are my favourite way of providing users with a path back to the start.

Eg: Home >> Services >> Business Services >> Product A
